"Art is finding and revealing that which is hidden but available to those who look for it."

I find inspiration from nature and the beauty of natural forms. My medium of choice is wood; maple, cherry, yew, oak, walnut, and cedar. My creations are crafted from pieces found on Guemes Island by myself or have been given to me by fellow Islanders.

The smell of different varieties of wood, the texture, grain patterns, and shapes bring to mind all kinds of different ideas and topics. Sometimes I speak for the wood, and sometimes the wood speaks for me. Consider it a process akin to a romantic relationship; the process beginning with acquaintance and expanding to feelings, respect, understanding, and sensitivity.

Recently I have come to find a love for sculpture. What an adventure it has been learning the world of clay, what a fantastic teacher I have in Sue Roberts. I have learned that in sculpture, the essence of the model is anatomy. That’s why DaVinci and Michelangelo tended to sculpt nudes. Adding clothing was seen as cheating. It had been a much welcomed challenge bringing out the beauty of the human form.
