Lynn Prewitt
What are “Artist Eyes” and what, exactly, do you do with them? If you ask Lynn Prewitt the answer begins with the world around her and ends with the creation of intriguing pieces of abstract art. When her artist eyes see a reflection of the sky in a mud puddle, the pattern of shadow on a wall, or the “faces” in the trunk of a tree they see the colors, shapes, and images that long to be turned into art.
Lynn’s current focus is Mixed Media and Collage pieces. For most of us, our collage days ended in elementary school, but thank goodness that wasn’t the case for Lynn. She goes way beyond simply cutting and pasting paper by adding acrylic paint, fabric, metal, etc. along with paper images. The beauty and emotion she brings forth with her artwork is truly inspirational.
Lynn not only transforms paper into one-of-a-kind pieces of art, she writes on it as well and turns her love of words into short stories and poetry. When she is not creating something original, one of her favorite occupations is helping reorganize the Guemes Island Library. “As an avid and omnivorous reader, I have loved discovering just how many wonderful books, DVDs, etc. our little library has to offer.” Lynn gives back to her island community in other ways too. She volunteers with the Guemes Island Community Church including working with Connie Snell to put out an occasional church/community newsletter that has 80+ “subscribers” and in 2014, she headed up the volunteer work crew that built the Island Labyrinth.
I asked Lynn what brought her to Guemes Island. “Over 20 years ago, when our son Dave Prewitt and his wife, Leslie Tysseling, decided to move to Guemes full-time, Norm and I had never heard of the place. In visiting them over the years, we fell in love with the peace and quiet as well as the community spirit of the island. Compared with the busyness of Mercer Island, where we had lived since 1969, Guemes was paradise as far as I was concerned.” In 2007, she told her son they would be interested in buying a second home on Guemes and asked him to keep an eye out for something in the interior. Luckily for them, the red saltbox house on Edens Road was for sale. They came, looked it over, fell in love with and bought it all on the same day. That was April 1, 2008. They decided to become full-timers in 2012. You can find her walking on Edens Road almost daily.
She has dabbled in other forms of art over the years including basketry, needle arts, paper sculpture, origami boxes, and printmaking. She enjoys exploring new ideas, mediums, and art forms and no matter the method she chooses, Lynn’s basic philosophy of life is ever present. “Keep your eyes open, your sense of humor active and above all pay attention to life’s synchronicities.”
